Men's Volleyball on the Rise
As the Spring sport season officially begins, sports such as soccer, tennis, lacrosse, and baseball are starting to prepare for the upcoming season. In some states and areas, one sport in particular is also beginning their season, and it may come across as a surprise to some, being that it's mainly known for being a Fall sport. That would be Men's Volleyball. While some may also consider it a "women's" sport, there is no denying the recent increase in popularity the sport has seen, and continues to see. The sport is without a doubt on the rise!
In 2014, Men's Volleyball became the fastest-growing emerging sport in NCAA history, and was also confirmed as the NCAA's 90th championship sport. There are currently 22 Division I programs, 24 Division II programs, and 68 Division III programs. Since 2014, there were 9 colleges that added Men's Volleyball programs at the Division III level alone.
At the high school level, the main issue of separation in participation amongst male and female volleyball is the stereotype that the sport is "for girls." Most of the time, males don't even realize that the sport is available for them. Take Fullerton College Freshman middle blocker Jordan Von Borstal for example, whose volleyball career began at at Beckman High School. "My friends in high school played volleyball and I had never heard of men's volleyball before then," he said. "I tried out my sophomore year and have played ever since."
Another reason people inside the sport believe the male game has made advances in popularity is due to the action of the game. People are now starting to realize that the sport is no joke! It's intense, fast-paced, and energetic, and being able to show the youth that is huge for the growth of the sport. "I just think that if a young player got a got a taste of what real men's volleyball is like, they'll realize it's not backyard barbecue volleyball," said Will Price, former Penn State volleyball player now training with USA Volleyball. "It's a completely different sport than what a lot of people imagine - it's fast, dynamic, and explosive."
The sport will continue to grow as the years go by, and with that being said, teams will continue to need to raise money for various team expenses! So, why not make it as easy as possible, and raise as much money as possible? Sign your men's volleyball team up for a fundraising campaign today at www.snap-raise.com.
